All told, though, this is a good car. Another good Tesla. The competition for the Model Y is much better today than for the Model 3 when it arrived here in 2018, but the establishment sometimes copies the wrong bit when trying to do what Tesla does. (For example, Volkswagen, of all companies, has entirely screwed up the simple concept of adjusting the temperature in the ID 3 and ID 4.)
This means that, despite some dynamic shortcomings and being too touchscreen-heavy, the Model Y is comfortably towards the top of the class, and with access to a charging network that’s still second to none.

The Model Y fills a niche in the Tesla line-up that means it will appeal to a large number of buyers. It features all of the tech of the Model 3, but the larger body means it's more spacious inside, while overall the car is more manageable than the larger Model X on tight UK roads. You pay a bit of a premium over the Model 3, and the Model Y’s driving range isn’t quite as long, but it’s still an electric SUV front-runner, and access to Tesla’s Supercharger network still gives it a clear advantage over its rivals.

The Tesla Model Y is a Model 3 for the more family-minded buyer. It could be better to drive, but it stands out for performance, range and charging – and should hold its value brilliantly.
